The CountySportsZone.com Story
Every score. From every game - varsity, JV, freshman. From every high school.
That was the goal of the founders of CountySportsZone.com. And the company has exceeded that lofty goal, becoming a valuable resource to high school sports communities in 12 jurisdictions across Maryland.
The company's first-year success in Howard County led to deals to become the home of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association playoff brackets as well all of the MPSSAA football scores and playoff point standings. In addition to Howard, County Sports Zone will serve Baltimore City, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Montgomery, Prince George's and Washington counties in the 2014-15 school year.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is a fan of County Sports Zone. Stuck in a meeting on the evening of Nov. 29, Mr. Ulman followed CSZ's score-by-score update of River Hill High School's victory over Huntingtown High School in the state Class 3A championship football game. County Sports Zone, Mr. Ulman wrote on his Facebook page, is a "great resource for parents & fans."
Said Jeff Sullivan, Athletics Specialist for the Montgomery County Public School System: "County Sports Zone has emerged as a comprehensive site for MCPS schedules, scores, and standings. I know our student-athletes, coaches, parents, and fans are excited to have a central resource for following the excitement of MCPS Athletics."
The brainchild of three long-time Howard County residents - an advertising executive, a computer expert and a journalist - County Sports Zone reports the scores of freshman volleyball games and JV wrestling matches with the same zeal as it does for varsity football and basketball.
Our goal is that every final score is posted by 10 o'clock every night. In fact, many scores are posted in real time, with updates coming after every quarter (and in some cases, after every scoring play).
A. Bruce Kline, Athletic Director at Bohemia Manor High School in Cecil County, said the parents at his school love County Sports Zone. "It is easier to get our teams' schedules, and they really like the scores being posted, sometimes in real time. Keep up the good work," he said.
We rely as much as possible on crowd sourcing: fans at the games can easily use their mobile phones to post scores. To ensure that the scores are posted in a timely manner and accurate, CSZ has an editor in charge as well as reporters available at game time working their sources - fans, managers, coaches and parents.
Said River Hill Girls Basketball Coach Teresa Waters: "We used County Sports Zone to check the scores of other games while we were on the bus back to River Hill. It is a tremendous service."
No other media outlet even attempts what County Sports Zone has succeeded in doing. Newspaper sites have many of the scores from varsity football, basketball, soccer. Specialty sites have many of the varsity wrestling scores, or results from cross country and track meets.
But nobody even tries to carry every score from every contest - including JV and even freshman games.
Said Howard High School JV Baseball Coach Steve Siani: "I appreciate you making JV relevant again."
