Amber Milnes, who coaches the girls basketball team at Aberdeen High School, is the County Sports Zone/Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month!

Aberdeen is in the midst of a sensational start to this season, opening with an 11-game winning streak. Over that span, the Eagles have beaten their opponents by more than 33 points per game on average.

"We know that we have talented players on our team, so we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, or think too much of ourselves," Coach Milnes said. "We have a saying of 'We Want to Stay Humble and Hungry.' We want to treat every opponent we face with respect that this team could beat us today, and we also want to be hungry every time we step on the court to give it our very best."

Coach Milnes is a native of Philadelphia. She was a three-sport athlete in high school, and was recruited to play field hockey at Shippensburg University.

Coach Milnes started coaching basketball in Maryland at Edgewood High School. She stayed with the Rams for four years before taking the job at Aberdeen, where she's been for six years, five of which have been spent as head coach. Coach Milnes has enjoyed tremendous success with the Eagles, the peak of which came in 2013 when she led the team to the MPSSAA Class 3A state championship.

She also is the Harford County school's science department chair. For her, Aberdeen is the ideal place to both teach and coach.

"I appreciate that the girls here are always willing to come to practice, work hard and push themselves because it can be quite challenging," Coach Milnes said. "They always leave in a good mood though because they know how hard they worked, and how that'll help them become better players."

To her players, Coach Milnes' impact goes far beyond basketball.

"Coach Milnes is a great person, and the type of person that"ll help you as much on the court as she does off of it, whether if it is with school or personal stuff," senior forward Briana Gibson said. "On the court, she always pushes you to go harder in games and practices."

Her competitive but friendly demeanor helps create a family atmosphere, senior forward Tatiana Gibson said. For Tatiana Gibson, that atmosphere is what makes the Aberdeen girls basketball team special.

"We're all close with each other. We actually have multiple sets of sisters on the team, which makes it even better," Tatiana Gibson said. "At Aberdeen you have a good time, it's not just about winning games. You make friendships that you remember for a long time."

For being named County Sports Zone/Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month, Coach Milnes received a gift certificate, bottle of sauce, hat and t-shirt from Buffalo Wild Wings, as well as County Sports Zone t-shirts.
