Ben Franklin's softball team is thriving under its first year head coach, Rhonda Waller.

The Bayhawks are 11-1 this season behind an incredibly potent offense. The Baltimore City School is averaging just under 18 runs a game, and have reached double digit runs in every game.

The team has also been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks- Ben Franklin's lone loss came on Mar. 29 against Frederick Douglass.

"I'm blessed to have seasonal players. I have four seniors who take ownership and leadership roles who help mentor the underclassmen," Waller said. "The Lady Bayhawks strength is their hitting power. We have some great hitters and understand the game along with their ability to steal a lot of bases!"

The team's offense is led by a pair of seniors who play on the left side of the infield who have turned in excellent final campaigns for their high school softball careers. Third baseman Mya Diggs and shortstop Shyann Snyder have done an excellent job of making contact and driving in runs on a consistent basis for the Bayhawks.

The duo is joined by junior pitcher Nichole Bushey in being a standout performer for Ben Franklin. Waller highlighted Bushey for her all-around play, as well as her softball IQ.

"The team is excited to continue play every game with intensity and commitment," Waller said.

Diggs, Snyder and Bushey will be key as Ben Franklin looks to have a successful playoff campaign like in 2016.

The Bayhawks finished last year 10-3, which included wins against Northwestern and Edmondson-Westside in the playoffs. Ben Franklin eventually reached the MPSSAA 1A South regional final, where the team came up short against Pikesville.

Waller is hoping her team can finish the season strongly, and in the process, get acknowledged for being a special group.

"They deserve to be recognized for their hard work and teamwork," Waller said.
