Leonardtown Wrestling Wins 2016 Grindstone Duals

Leonardtown from St. Mary's County finished 8-0 at the Grindstone Duals wrestling tournament to win the competition. The Grindstone Duals, which is hosted by Winters Mill in Carroll County, was also won by Leonardtown in 2015.

This year the Raiders were truly dominant, outscoring opponents 502-110 over the course of the competition. The team began brightly by besting Westminster 56-12 in its first match, before downing Lackey 72-6.

In the sixth round, Leonardtown faced Northern Garrett, which would eventually finish second at the competition. It's the closest contest the Raiders had the entire weekend, getting past the Huskies 40-31. Leonardtown secured its undefeated tournament win by topping Chesapeake-AA in the final round, 72-12.

Northern Garrett's loss to to Leonardtown was the only one the Huskies suffered over the two day tournament. The team battled its way through a couple close victories, winning its round two contest with Owings Mills 40-30, and its final match with Winters Mill 42-33. The team was led by Devin Wilhelm, who was named the outstanding lightweight wrestler of the tournament while competing in the 126 lbs. division.

Southern Garrett finished third with a 6-2 mark. The team struggled in the first day of the competition, going 1-2 with its win coming against Digital Harbor. The Rams turned it around the second day though by winning all of its matches, with the highlight being its 37-36 win against Westminster in round six.

The hosts rounded out the top four by finishing 5-3. Winters Mill's better day was the first one, when the Falcons went 3-0 and outscored Digital Harbor, Lackey and Owings Mills by a combined score of 199-39.

Joining Wilhelm in winning an individual honor was David Hollingsworth from Owings Mills, who won the Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler of the tournament while competing at 152 lbs.
