Gaithersburg Hires Eric Cava to Take Helm of Boys Soccer Program

Gaithersburg has added Eric Cava to their coaching staff, hiring the Annapolis native to be the head coach of their boys' soccer program.

"I feel that Montgomery County has one of the strongest youth development soccer programs in the state," Cava said. "When the position opened at Gaithersburg, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to partake in the development of a high school soccer program."

While this will be Cava's first job as a head coach at the high school varsity level, Gaithersburg is still getting a coach with a wealth of experience. As a player, Cava played on the Youth Olympic Development team, as well as the US Regional team that saw him play in Europe on several occasions. At the high school level, he played at Abington High School in Pennsylvania for three years before finishing his high school career at Broadneck in Annapolis. He finished his playing career at Clemson, where he was a four year starter in their midfield.

At the coaching level, Cava has worked at the JV level for Churchill the last two years, leading the team to a 16-1-1 record. He also coaches for numerous different club teams, including several Potomac Club boys teams. Cava also coaches for the Maryland Olympic Development team, being the U13 girls head coach, and an assistant for the U15 boys. He holds a US National Coaching C license.

"I always emphasize the importance of hard work and integrity. I always tell my players to show me effort," Cava said. "I expect players to work hard both on and off the field, to respect the game and most of all, each other."

Cava is taking over a program that had a strong 2014 campaign, finishing 11-6-1. The Trojans lost in the 4A West regional final of the MPSSAA state tournament, falling 2-1 to eventual state champion Walt Whitman.

"My short term goals are to develop the players' tactical and strategic skills," Cava said. "Long term goals would be to develop a strong high school program with consecutive state title wins."
