Tennis State Tournament Winners and Notes

This spring the MPSSAA crowned team champions in the state tennis tournament for the first time in addition to boys and girls singles and doubles champions. Walt Whitman (4A), Centennial (3A), Marriotts Ridge (2A) and Sparrows Point (1A) were the first four schools to earn team state titles in MPSSAA history.

Points were calculated between both the regional and state championships. Both Sparrows Point and Centennial led after the regional competitions, while Marriotts Ridge and Whitman used strong showings on the state level to take home their respective trophies. The 1A race was the closest, as Sparrows Point edged out Frederick Douglass-PG by just one point, 39-38.

Whitman earned key points at the state level from boys singles champion Evin McDonald and boys doubles champions Zach Rosen and Hugh Markham. Centennial got strong runner-up performances in both boys (Danny Ho and Ryan Huang) and girls (Abby Jackson and Shreya Vallimanalan) doubles.

Marriotts Ridge featured 2A mix doubles champions Kartik Gupta and Defne Demirekler along with runner-up efforts in girls singles (Kallista Liu) and boys doubles (Revanth Bairi and Brandon Tseytlin). Sparrows Point did much of their work at the regional championships but still featured the runners-up in the girls doubles (Sammie Bennett and Alana Levy).
