MPSSAA Releases New Classifications and Regional Alignments for 2019-21

Every two years the MPSSAA updates the state's classification and regional alignments based on school enrollment numbers and geography. The alignments for 2019-20 and 2020-21 have been released on their site (under Reference Documents -> 2019-2021 Sport Specific Classifications & Regional Alignments): https://www.mpssaa.org/information-center/references/

One significant change for this two-year cycle is the division of classifications (1A-4A) separately within each sport. For example, James H. Blake High School will compete in the 4A classification in outdoor track and field, but will compete in the 3A classification in spring tennis.

According to Michael Duffy, the Athletics and Activities Manager at Howard High School, the change was made because several (mostly smaller) schools only compete in a handful of sports. The change helps balance the number of active programs within each classification for each sport.

The file is available as a downloadable Microsoft Excel file. Classification and regional information for each individual sport can be found on the bottom tabs of the file.
