Ask the AD - Kyle Hines, Glen Burnie High School
This summer, just like we did last summer, CSZ will be doing a segment on the WICKipedia entitled "Ask the AD". In this feature, we'll be conducting Q&A's with various athletic directors around Maryland to learn more about how different high schools run their athletic programs, and what to expect from them in the future.
Today we're featuring Kyle Hines from Glen Burnie High School in Anne Arundel County! Kyle spoke with us about a variety of topics, including a couple updates for Glen Burnie's athletic facilities!
County Sports Zone:How did you become athletic director at Glen Burnie? How did your appointment come about?
Kyle Hines:I was teaching at The Summit School in Edgewater and was notified by the county about several openings. I then received an interview from Glen Burnie in regards to the opening and now here I am living my dream.
CSZ:How did you find the first year of the job to be? What about this first year did you enjoy the most?
KH:I have learned a lot and leaned on our Office of Athletics and AD's from around the county, especially Dave Lanham at Severna Park, for support. I have enjoyed having a direct impact on student-athletes and their high school experiences.
CSZ:How would you rate this past year for Glen Burnie Athletics? Were there a couple highlights that stand out?
KH:I felt it was a good year for our programs overall but there is always room to improve and not just in the standings; academics, sportsmanship, service as well. Having our cheerleading program qualify for states, women's soccer beating Old Mill in the first round of the playoffs, and experiencing the first victory of our new volleyball coach's career to name a few.
CSZ:How do you view the athletic director's role within the community of a high school?
KH:Athletic Directors should have a major role in the school community and can impact all students on a daily basis. Staying on top of student-athletes grades and attendance letting the school community know that we are a student first athletic program and that athletics are extracurricular activities.
CSZ:Is there anything exciting or new we should be on the look out for from Glen Burnie's athletic department?
KH:With the help of the county and Clayton Culp, our facilities have improved rapidly around our complex this year. This Spring our softball field received a 200 ft. fence and a brick walkway with landscaping was installed at our stadium entrance. Our turf field will be replaced this Summer and a concession stand that will be completed this Fall.
CSZ:What are your long term goals for the Glen Burnie Athletics program?
KH:Leaders in service and sportsmanship as student-athletes in Anne Arundel County. Offering our student-athletes more than just the playing experience but serving our community with respect and integrity throughout their high school years. We need to change the culture within our athletic department and school community to make this happen.

KH:Glen Burnie Athletics signed a deal with Under Armour this past Fall and hired two coaches for the 2017-18 school year. Bookie Rosemond will be taking over the girls basketball program and Morris Moreland will be heading our tennis program in the Spring.
