Opening Day Musings

After more than three weeks of preseason, the MPSSAA fall regular season is finally here! The only sport that doesn't debut today is golf, which started its season a couple weeks ago.

Whenever a new sports season starts, I am always reminded of this famous Joe Dimaggio quote: "You always get a special kick on opening day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen."

That quote still holds true to this day.

On Opening Day, everyone is 0-0 and the whole season is stretched out in front of you with endless possibilities, regardless of how last season ended. Defending champions dream of repeating, while historically underachieving programs hope this is the year they finally live up to their promise. Teams beginning eras with new coaches envision their new leader taking them to the promise land, while little known teams hope they're the team to come from nowhere to make a huge impact this season.

As we have since 2012, County Sports Zone will be here to post the scores and standings the night of the game. For the first time, we will be statewide on a year round basis for every sport this year. It's a daunting task, but one we couldn't be more excited about taking on.

The WICKipedia will also continue to cover the many great stories high school sports provides us with. As much as I've loved doing the summer Q&A's with AD's (something we will continue throughout the year), I'm excited to have game action to write about again.

Remember to check out County Sports Zone tonight to see how your team did on opening day! In case you don't know how to get there, you can get to our homepage by clicking here.

Also for those big football fans, don't forget to check out our football specific section. We're the official provider of the MPSSAA results for football, so if you want to see game scores and the official standings, our site would be a good one for you to get familiar with.

I'd like to wish everyone good luck with their seasons, and enjoy opening day!
