Springbrook 30 - Einstein 11
The Blue Devils improved to 5-3 by winning their homecoming game against Einstein 30-11. With the victory, Springbrook snapped a two game losing skid.
Quarterback Lawrence Cadet spread the ball around to multiple receivers, with three different receivers catching touchdown passes thrown by him. Cadet completed 18 of 31 passes for 196 yards. Collins Takah was his main target, catching six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. John Grant and Deson Flood also caught Cadet touchdown passes. Redwan Sesay caught seven passes for 68 yards. Sesay also threw a touchdown on a reverse, hooking up with Nate Green for a 40 yard score.
Isaac Ukwu had a dominant performance for the Blue Devils on defense, recording nine tackles including three sacks and two others for losses. Daejon Jenkins had six tackles including two for losses, while Amadou Tall had three tackles with two of them being sacks. Takah and Sesay also had interceptions for the defense, with Takah returning his 38 yards for a touchdown.
Springbrook looks to make it two wins in two weeks next Friday when they travel to Harford County to play Aberdeen.
North Hagerstown 42 - Frederick 12
North Hagerstown won their first game since 2013 by beating Frederick on the road 42-12. This is also the first win for Hubs head coach Greg Stains.
On offense, sophomore quarterback Bennie Barnes threw for 152 yard. He linked up with his receivers for four touchdown passes. Senior Chris Smith came away with two touchdown grabs, while freshman Scott Neal and sophomore Chase Metz each got in the end zone once. Metz also ran in a two point conversion. Junior TJ Harris had a rushing touchdown.
The special teams unit also got in on the scoring when sophomore Ashton Vanvelzor recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. Sophomore Seth Hartman was four for five on extra point attempts.
Defensively, the Hubs had two interceptions, one caught by junior Dyujay Smith and the other by sophomore Jacob Sprecher.
North Hagerstown hosts Liberty next Friday night at 7:00.
Urbana 14 - Middletown 10
Urbana scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to beat Middletown, winning 14-10. The Hawks are now 4-4, but have won three of their past four games.
Urbana used a two headed rushing attack on the offense. Elijah Atkins carried the ball 28 times for 141 yards, averaging five yards per carry. Atkins also provided a big run to get Urbana on the scoreboard, busting out a 40 yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make the game 10-7. Gage Dickens was the other part of the attack. He also carried the ball 28 times, rushing for 148 yards. Dickens scored the winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a nine yard rush.
The defense was led by Andres Silva and his nine tackles. Cameron Samuels also had a strong performance, recording seven tackles including three for a loss. Silva and Samuels also combined for the defense's only sack of the game. Parker Mellott also had an interception.
Urbana travels to Catoctin in Week 9.
Edmondson-Westside 18 - Mervo 15
The Red Storm picked up their seventh straight win in dramatic fashion. Kamal Highsmith scored the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left in the game to beat previously undefeated Mervo 18-15.
Edmondson-Westside's sophomore quarterback, Teon Gardner threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Both of Gardner's touchdowns went to his favorite target, Bilial Omar. Omar finished the day with 147 receiving yards.
Edmondson-Westside will look to extend its winning streak next week when they face go on the road to face Cover Vo-Tech.
