Speedy Damascus Field Hockey Looking to Succeed in 2015

The Damascus field hockey team is expecting to use their speed to beat opponents in 2015. Last year's squad made their sectional final in the MPSSAA 2A State Tournament, where they lost to Poolesville, 5-0. This year's team will bring back eight seniors from that team, as well as a few younger players who were pulled up to the varsity in 2014.

"I had a great combination of skill and motivation with my team from last year," head coach Amanda Quay said. "I have a good amount of speed on the team this year. We are a combination of older experienced players and brand new athletes."

The team is anticipating having a solid midfield this year with seniors Michelle Thomas and Maddie Strokis expected to have big seasons. Damascus is hoping to employ a small and fast passing game, which will play into the team's speed advantage. The team is also hoping to work well as a team, and be aggressive in the circle throughout the season.

Damascus faces Springbrook in their opening game this season. It is expected to be a tricky contest since the two teams have not played each other in recent memory. Damascus will also have to contend with Blake this year, a team they are historically competitive with who is now in their section.

"We want to work as a team and motivate each other," said Quay. "Hustle and communication will be a must for every contest."
