MPSSAA Volleyball Finals Day 2

Class 4A

When both teams have 19-0 records, and it's the MPSSAA Class 4A state title game, something has to give.

And Monday night at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park, Northwest High School stayed undefeated with a 3-0 victory over Dulaney High School for the Montgomery County school's first state volleyball crown.

Northwest was led by senior Gabby Bennett, who had 11 kills, and freshman Jenaisya Moore, who had nine. Chaya Riggs had seven service aces for the Jags, who lost only four sets all year.

The Lions, who before Monday night had lost only three sets all year, were led by senior Olivia Finkel, who had a game-high 16 kills, and senior Rebecca Rawlinson, who had 10. Finical will attend Palm Beach Atlantic University next year on a full volleyball scholarship.

Class 2A

Rising Sun High School got 17 kills from junior Breanne Haley and 12 more from fellow junior Lacey Swartout to defeat Patuxent High School 3-0 in the MPSSAA Class 2A volleyball title game at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park.

The Tigers won 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 to nab their third state championship. They finished with a 23-1 record.

Patuxent was led by senior Michelle Gateau with 11 kills and senior Kayla Stewart, who had eight.

The Panthers, who finished the year with a 15-4 record, stayed close in the first two sets. In the first set, Rising Sun ran out to an 8-3 lead, but Patuxent chipped away and took leads of 19-17 and 20-18. But Rising Sun regrouped and took the set 25-22.

The Panthers kept the Tigers in their sights in the second set, but could never get closer than six, at 23-17 before Rising Sun won the set 25-20.

Junior Sarah Williams had 13 digs for Rising Sun and Stewart had 13 for Patuxent.
