MPSSAA Volleyball Finals Day 1

Class 3A

Northern High School was stretched to the limit, but the Patriots finished their season undefeated by topping Damascus 3-2 in the MPSSAA Class 3A volleyball championship game Friday night at Ritchie Coliseum.

Northern (20-0) won its 10th state volleyball title. Damascus finished its season 16-2.

The Patriots won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-23, before Damascus came back to win the third set, 25-23, and the fourth set, 25-22. The Swarmin' Hornets, while keeping things close in the first two sets, took their first lead of the match when they went up 4-3 in the third set.

Junior Amy Hagen led Northern with 10 kills, followed by sophomore Kiana Bopp with nine and sop Amanda Chew and junior Sam Frost with eight apiece.

Damascus was led by Sophomore Olivia Fagan with 12 kills, and freshman Celia Larson with nine.

Class 1A

Megan Moran and Alaina Black led Smithsburg High School to the MPSSAA Class 1A State Volleyball championship Friday night with a 3-0 victory over McDonough High School at Ritchie Coliseum.

Moran and Black, both 6 feet tall, were too much for the Rams to handle. The Leopards won 25-5, 25-9, 25-9 and were never seriously challenged. Moran, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UNC-Greensboro, had three kills in the first set and five in both the second and third sets. Black had two in the first, three in the second and two more in the third, and had three straight aces in the second set.

It was Smithsburg's 11th state volleyball title and second in a row. The Rams finished the year with an 18-2 record. They lost 13 sets all year.

McDonough finished the year 8-11. It was the second appearance in a state volleyball championship game.
