Century Girls Lacrosse Has High Expectations for 2016

Century's girls lacrosse team sets big goals every season, and this year is no different. After winning the 3A/2A championship last year, the seventh for the Knights since 2003, Century hopes to win its second straight this season.

"It was great to get back and win a state title. It's always a disappointing season if it doesn't end in a state championship," head coach Becky Groves said. "This year it gives us the motivation to continue our high level and strive to defend our state title."

The team will have to continue to grow in order for the Knights to replicate last season's success. Century was hit hard by the graduation bug, losing 12 players, including seven starters, from last year's team.

Despite the big losses, Groves is still confident this year's team will be a force. The Knights have given their coach every reason to be confident after getting off to a strong start. The team opened the 2016 season with a 27-3 road win over North Hagerstown. In the following game, the Knights bested Sherwood 22-6.

"It's always nice to start the year with a win," Groves said. "It gives the team a sense of confidence to start the season."

Among those players who have stepped into larger roles this year are Lucy Hart and Michaela Connolly. Hart leads the team with 15 points, which includes seven goals and eight assists, while Connolly has seven goals and five assists. The duo has joined more established players like Hannah Warther (six goals, two assists) and Kylie Davis (six goals, two assists) in leading Century's attack, while Caroline Glenn and Heidi Curtis have held down the fort in defense.

It's made for a complete team thus far, that should only get better the more games the Knights play.

"Play together, hustle, and continue to improve," Groves said of the team's goals for the season.
