Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month
Denean Koontz - North Carroll Field Hockey
Looking to submit a coach? Click hereCoach Koontz has been the head field hockey coach at the Hampstead school - where she graduated from in 1986 - for 22 years. She also is assistant coach for the lacrosse team in the spring. When Coach Koontz took over the field hockey program, it was her first head-coaching job.
This fall, the Panthers finished third in Carroll County (losing to Century and Westminster during the regular season), but then they stormed through the playoffs, beating Liberty, Manchester Valley, Walkersville and Loch Raven on the way to the title game. In the final, after falling behind for the first time in the playoffs, North Carroll beat Fallston, 2-1, with Coach Koontz' daughter, Jensyn, scoring the game-winning goal in the second half.
Coach Koontz grew up in Hampstead and played field hockey at North Carroll, and then at Virginia Commonwealth University. She started teaching in 1990 at Westminster Elementary, moved to North Carroll Middle School two years later, and then to North Carroll High in 1997.
She said the best part about coaching the Panthers is "the kids, hands down."
"The kind of kid that this program breeds is top of the line," she said.
For being named County Sports Zone/Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month, Coach Koontz received a gift certificate, a box of sauces and a hat from Buffalo Wild Wings, and a County Sports Zone Under Armour t-shirt.
