Gena Young - New Town Girls Basketball

Gena Young, who led New Town High School to its first ever MPSSAA Class 1A state girls basketball finals appearance last season, is the County Sports Zone/Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month for December.

Coach Young has coached girls basketball in the Baltimore metro area for 18 years. She began coaching at New Town as an assistant six years ago, and has been the head coach for the past four years. It is her first head coaching job.

Last winter, the Titans had an outstanding regular season in Baltimore County, earning them the No. 1 overall seed in their section for the MPSSAA playoffs. Lopsided victories over Carver A&T and Pikesville put New Town in the regional final, the round of the tournament in which the Titans' past two seasons had ended. It was a different story this time around though, as New Town beat Forestville on the road 45-37 to claim the regional title. The Titans won big in their semifinal contest against Baltimore City's National Academy Foundation before falling in the final to Southern Garrett in a close, hard-fought contest.

Coach Young grew up in Baltimore City and played basketball at Patterson High School. Injuries prevented her from being able to play at the collegiate level. While she never got to play basketball in college, she has seen many of her players make that next step, which she says is her favorite part about coaching at New Town.

"I love developing the young ladies' talents into their dreams and aspirations of playing at the college level," she said. In particular, she said she loves to emphasize defense and "playing up tempo, we're a run-and-gun team."

For being named County Sports Zone/Buffalo Wild Wings Coach of the Month, Coach Young received a gift certificate, a box of sauces and a hat from Buffalo Wild Wings, as well as a County Sports Zone Under Armour t-shirt.
